DOUBLE TROUBLE

What Is a Djembe Crown?

A djembe crown is a crucial part of your drums tensioning system.

It’s the arrangement of ropes, ring and cloth that sits on the top of the drum, and is used to secure the drumhead to the body of the djembe.

In a standard setup, the single crown consists of the top metal ring, a decorative cloth strip, and a single rope.

The cloth is wound around the ring to give it grip and decoration. The rope is then threaded around the ring with a knot called a cow hitch.

The skin is placed underneath the head and, with the help of another metal ring, secures the drum skin tightly over the drum head.

How To Make A Djembe Crown?

It’s fairly simple to make a basic djembe crown, and we suggest you replace the rope and cloth when you repair your djembe.

The ring is stripped back to the metal. A new cloh or ribbon is wound around, and new rope is threaded to create the loops, or cradles.

What Is A Double Crown?

If you thought a djembe crown was already a showstopper, wait until you see it with a double crown setup.

The double crown is similar to the normal crown, but involves using two ropes instead of the normal one.

Having two ropes adds double the strength to your crown, and gives you a chance to unleash your inner artist with some fabulous color combinations.

How Do You Make A Double Crown?

The only difference between a double crown and the usual rope work on a djembe is the top ring.

Take two ropes— for the loops on the top ring. Start by weaving them around around the ring, ensuring they form a neat and secure loop and run parallell to each other, creating those stylish double cow hitches.

Make sure to tie everything off securely, and voilà! You’ve just added a touch of flair and strength to your djembe that would make even Michael Jackson proud! Now you’re ready to rock out with a drum that not only sounds great but looks fabulous too!

How Many Ropes Should I Use?

When it comes to a double crown djembe setup, you’ll want to use four ropes in total.

What Type Of Rope Do I Use?

When it comes to choosing rope for your double crown, you want something that tough.

Djembe rope is usually braided cord—it’s strong, durable, and comes in a variety of colors.

Look for ropes that are 4mm to 5mm thick, depending on the size of your drum.

What Colours Can I Use?

Let’s talk about color—because who doesn’t love a bit of pizzazz?

With a double crown setup, you can mix and match colors like you’re creating a masterpiece worthy of an art gallery (or at least an 80’s music video).

From vibrant reds to electric blues, the options are endless. You can even go wild and create patterns that make your djembe stand out in any crowd.
